Why didn’t anyone tell me when I signed on for this job that I could expect the invasion of the mutants?  Yes, the first arrived at the market last Friday.  Did you see it?  Rumor has it that it was a Suzy the Duck clone dressed in bright red..

Well if you’re really confused (as I was) I can give you an explanation (after checking out details with Sherlock Holmes).  In previous years the Lodi Valley Farmers’ Market initiated a “mutant vegetable contest.”  You know sometimes genes and DNA go astray in plants (and maybe some other species, perhaps).  This allows for some more than unusual specimens.  Our first one showed up last Friday in the form of a tomato looking an awful lot like Lodi’s most famous quacker.

Because of the early arrival of the first mutant, the contest rules are modified.  Bring your most  picturesque garden goodie and we will photograph it and put the picture on the barn door.  At a market in August we will ask you to vote for your favorite.  Larry the Leek (aka Larry the no show leaker) is the most mutant of all.  He is the original poster boy, so he can’t be in the competition or vote.  Could I be looking for love in all the wrong places?  I think the Lodi Valley Farmers’ Market barn door is a better option than the internet personals.

Friday’s market will be visited by your local library with summer reading suggestions to savor while you enjoy all the market goodies.  Warm weather should bring out strawberries for you savor along with the most delicious and freshest locally grown garden goodies you can find.

The Lodi Valley Farmer’s Market is held on Friday afternoons from 2 – 6 May through October at the Northern Edge Restaurant, located at N1430 Highway 113, Lodi, WI.
