Threats of rain didn’t stop our vendors or our shoppers last Friday.  Business as usual or I should say business as UN-usual.

Arriving at the market early on Friday, Lake Lodi appeared in the midst of the parking lot. Vendors and shoppers edged the lake, but in the middle we had a new invasive species… five bright yellow rubber ducks.  Don’t know if they’re Susie clones or cousins, but time will tell.  These fantastic five are not yet named, but obviously pets of the market.  The two young Schroeder boys who come to help their mom and dad at the market became the official duck hunters at the end of the market to retrieve them.  They couldn’t wait to get in that water (even though the lake was only a couple of inches deep) to swoop them up, dry them off and “nest” them in the market barn.

Flowers flew off the vendors tables last Friday.  One vendor brought 20 bouquets of bright colored flowers and they were snapped up quickly. Nice to know that home tables are laden with the bounty of the garden—flowers and vegetables. From my view at the market table I get to watch the vendors tables get smaller and smaller as the afternoon wears on toward 6 o’clock.  What a delight to see the shoppers with bags full and vendors tables empty out.  It pays to come early to shop.

Buy Fresh Buy Local is the market theme this year and every other year since it began.  The concept of healthy food is finally reaching the main stream media.  The film Food, Inc., tells the story of the corporate control of our food supply.  It will both scare you and make you more than grateful that the Lodi Valley Farmers’ Market is available to you.  The cover story of Time magazine this past week says it all. “The Real Cost of Cheap Food.  Warning: Why the American food system is bad for our bodies, our economy and our environment and what some visionaries are trying to do about it.” You are the visionaries who come to the market for fresh affordable, delicious  healthy food.

That can happen only because we have outstanding vendors…beyond the best in my book.  This Friday we are celebrating and thanking them with special recognition.  Stop by to say thank you for their hard work that makes Lodi a great place to live.

I’ll bet we don’t need to include Larry the Leek in the thank yous this week.  Rumor has it that Larry is cruising in the new clunker for cash car he bought.  Maybe if we watch closely, we’ll find him heading down Highway 113.

See you at the market on Friday…….

The Lodi Valley Farmer’s Market is held on Friday afternoons from 2 – 6 May through October at the Northern Edge Restaurant, located at N1430 Highway 113, Lodi, WI.
