From the Stacks-Library NewsKids can “Catch the Reading Bug” this summer at Lodi LibraryBeautiful butterflies, icky creepy crawlies and lots of other fun bugs will greet kids as the Lodi Public Library encourages kids to “Catch the Reading Bug” during this year’s Summer Library Program. Students can sign up for the program starting Thursday, June 12. The library’s summer program is designed to keep kids active and entertained while also helping maintain or improve reading skills during the school break. At signup, kids from kindergarten through fifth grade are asked to set a reading goal for themselves. Reading may be recorded in books or time spent reading, and each reading level they surpass is celebrated with special prizes. A similar “read-to-me” program is available for preschool children with prizes given for each 120 minutes of reading, up to four hours. In addition to the reading program, the library also will sponsor a series of fun entertainment as part of the summer program, starting with these events:
The library is assisted in the program by local business sponsors who provide incentives for students. This year’s sponsors include Lodi All-Stop Plaza, Culver’s, Madison Mallards, Weber’s Bakery, the WI Department of Natural Resources, and the WI Division of Libraries, Technology and Community Learning. Teen library program beginsTeens won’t get left out of the fun this summer at the Lodi Public Library – there are plenty of activities just for middle school and high school students in the summer library program’s teen theme: “Metamorphosis.” Participants in the Lodi teen reading club will be entered in a prize drawing once for each 120 minutes of reading they record. Teens who read more than two hours will be invited to a party in August with pizza, Guitar Hero, and Dance Dance Revolution. Additionally, the library is offering an on-line discussion of 20 books for teens. TeenRead08 is a moderated blog sponsored by South Central Library System and Lodi Public Library. Registration is required to participate in TeenRead08, and a youth services librarian will approve posts and comments before they are posted. The blog site is: teenread08.scls.info. Other summer library programs for teens will include a manga drawing workshop and a digital photography “metamorphosis” session. Teens also have their own version of the library’s popular “bingo” cards, with treats for every 10 stamps they earn.
