Senior, Disability and Human Services Organizations Host Gubernatorial and US Senate Candidate Forum on July 30 in Green Bay

All three US Senate candidates have confirmed; Gubernatorial candidates invited

A broad coalition of senior, disability and human services organizations are collaborating on a statewide forum at which the candidates for Wisconsin Governor and US Senate have been invited to appear.

The Candidate Forum on Aging and Disability Long Term Care will be held from 11:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. on Friday, July 30 in Green Bay at the Green Bay Radisson Hotel and Conference Center, 2040 Airport Road. The forum is strictly non-partisan and is not part of any endorsement process. The day will end with a roundtable discussion featuring some of the State’s aging, disability and human services leaders.

“The aging, disability and human service issues that the next governor and US Senator are going to confront have enormous implications for the everyday lives of people with disabilities and seniors, for their families, for providers and for our state,” said Nino Amato, president of the Wisconsin Coalition of Aging Groups (CWAG) one of the Forum’s sponsors.

Added Maureen Ryan, co-chair of the Survival Coalition of Wisconsin Disability Organizations another of the Forum’s sponsoring groups, “This forum accomplishes three important goals: it demonstrates the breadth and depth of the interest in these issues, it demonstrates how united the aging and disability community is in our advocacy around those issues, and it provides candidates an opportunity to address, in one place in front of a large crowd, the funding and service questions that must get answered in the next state budget.”

Candidates are being given 35 minutes each to address the 500 people expected to attend the forum. The format features each candidate on stage individually, answering written questions that will likely cover topics including funding for services, the growing deficit in Medicaid and prospects for sustainable funding for long term care.

All three of the candidates for US Senate, Dave Westlake, Ron Johnson and Senator Russ Feingold have confirmed their attendance. Mr. Westlake will appear at 2:45 p.m., Mr. Johnson at 3:25 p.m. and Senator Feingold at 4:05 p.m. The gubernatorial candidates will appear from 11:00 a.m. until about 1:00 p.m.  Scheduling and confirmation with their respective campaigns is on-going.

Forum co-sponsors include Coalition of Wisconsin Aging Groups (CWAG); Board for People with Developmental Disabilities (BPDD); Disability Rights Wisconsin (DRW); Survival Coalition of Wisconsin Disability Organizations; Wisconsin Disability Vote Coalition (WDVC); Wisconsin Long Term Care Workforce Alliance; Managed Health Services; Wisconsin APSE; Rehabilitation for Wisconsin (RFW); Milwaukee Center for Independence; Wisconsin Coalition of Independent Living Centers; Brain Injury Association of Wisconsin (BIAW); Community Alliance of Providers (CAPOW); Make It Work Milwaukee!
