Final Spring Creek Cleanup
Lodi, WI
9/21/09
The fifth and final clean up day on Spring Creek was scheduled for Saturday, September 19. However that day has been canceled. The new date is Saturday, September 26th. Our work crews have been small over the summer of 2009. But progress has been good. It is now possible to paddle from Goeres Park to the lake in a kayak and get out of your boat only once. You also currently need to duck under about five branches. Because of a canoe’s higher profile, it is necessary to exit your boat 4 to 5 times to portage around fallen trees. On August 22nd, Bill Welch, Patti Herman, Jean Hofmann and myself put in a full day and made significant progress. Thanks also to Tom Heberlien and his friend Mr. Baxter, Bill Haupt, Bill Peterson, Brian Larsen and Charlie Luthin for their volunteer time in June and July. We have an excellent shot at removing the remaining deadfalls on the 26th of September. So please help make that possible by volunteering on the 26th. Please notify me in advance if you can come. I can then have enough donuts and coffee for all. Meet at 8:30 AM at the first bridge north of Lodi on Highway 113. We’ll be waiting for you with your donut and hot coffee. Please bring loppers, water and some snacks.
Thanks,
Fred Hofmann- email me

Spring Creek Student Study
Lodi, WI
June 18, 2009
On June 3rd, students from the high school enrolled in Environmental Science ventured out to Spring Creek to conduct various assessments on water quality. Hannah Fanney and Katee Kratcha lead the groups as they mixed chemicals and searched the creek for aquatic life. Crayfish, juvenile trout, mayfly larva, and more was eagerly examined by the students. Other assessments included: creek habitat, water clarity, temperature, dissolved oxygen levels, biotic index, and water flow.
Trained by the DNR and UW-Extensions, Fanney and Kratcha, as well as many other community citizens, will be routinely monitoring the health of Spring Creek. This program was sponsored by the Friends of Lodi Scenic Valley and will last for at least one year. “After the training, we were inspired to pass on our knowledge to the schools,” says Fanney. She adds, “I wanted to give the students an idea of how important Spring Creek is to the community and I am hoping that they will gain a little more respect for our watershed.”

Spring Creek Cleanup June 13
Lodi, Wisconsin
6/4/09
by Fred Hofmann
On May 16, three brave souls embarked down Spring Creek on a chilly morning of 46 degrees to pluck trash and clear a number of downed trees. Six bulging trash bags filled primarily with plastic soda bottles and a lesser quantities of Styrofoam cups, plastic bags and the always surprising miscellaneous category. Within that category were an orange traffic cone, a deteriorated foam ball, eight feet of four inch drainage tube, an unopened one gallon container of antifreeze and of course, the usual dirty duck from Susie Days. As the morning wore on, the sun did warm us and the day of cleaning the creek was quite pleasant. For all of the kayak and canoe enthusiasts in the Lodi area, it is now possible to paddle, unobstructed, from Goeres Park to the first bridge on the north end of Don Thistle’s property.
The second cleanup day of the season is scheduled for June 13. If you are a willing volunteer and would like to accelerate the progress of clearing Spring Creek all the way to Lake Wisconsin, please come to the Water Treatment Plant on Fair Street at 8:30 AM on June 13th. Bring a canoe, if possible, a snack, water, and loppers. We will attempt to end the work day by 12:30 – 1:00. On June 13th we will initiate the use of the new chainsaw winch recently purchased by the Friends of the Scenic Lodi Valley. This will greatly increase the ability to pull deadfalls out of the creek and save on the backs of all volunteers.
Thank you to Jean Hofmann and Charlie Luthin for leaving a hot cup of cofffe at the kitchen table and braving a chilly morning on May 16th to further the Spring Creek Water Trail project.

Spring Creek Clean-up Effort Deserves a Round of Applause
Lodi, WI-5/13/09

The banks along Spring Creek from Veteran’s Park to Goeres Park and the water itself are cleaner and much more debris free.
Our sincere thanks go to the effort of the Environmental Science classes of Mr. Anthony Schnell and Ms. Donna Melchior at the Lodi High School. On Thursday, May 07, 2009, the students came on two buses, one in the a.m. and one in the p.m. and swept along the creek banks, grabbing cans, bottles, Styrofoam, plastic bags and some unidentified large objects of interest. Several students brought waders and walked in the water along the route. Read more »
