Lodi Valley News editors Gary N-Ski and Roger Seaver spent part of Saturday hiking at Blackhawk Ridge, just south of Sauk-Prairie on Highway 78. They captured these images of the first signs of autumnal color, combining shots from an older generation digital camera and a digital camcorder. We are still a couple of weeks from peak color in this area.

Cup plants are taking over the Rain Garden, to the exclusion of other desirable prairie plants that were planned by the DNR for diversity, seasonal interest and colour.
UW Arboretum staff have advised that to kill an 8′ monstorous cup plant we would need to sever the tough tap root that could be 5 or 6 feet long. Digging does not seem an option. Grubbing tools, to get far enough below the surface to permanently sever the tap root, seem a good option. I think a mattock (or similar tool) administered by a strong arm might achieve the goal, followed by a swipe of Round Up.
There are other envasives that also need to be removed – thistles, wild parsnip, burr dock and dandilions.
Equipment
*********
Old clothes – long pants and shirt sleeves (parsnips burn and stain)
Work gloves
Mattock or similar tool
Loppers or pruners
Trowel or other favorite weeding tool
Bug spray
Before dark we will gather at the Council Ring for refreshments and chatter.
Consider this a “no cost” environmental/exercise/social event benefitting the Rain Garden and brought to you by your Friends of Scenic Lodi Valley.

Lodi Valley News photographer Gary N-Ski snapped these shots around Lodi, Wisconsin this past week. As temperatures have finally moderated, the landscape is coming alive with sure signs of Spring. In these photos, maple leaves unfurl before your eyes in the warm afternoon sun. A morel is waiting patiently to add a special touch to someone’s meal. The runoff from a recent spring rainstorm paints a peaceful scene at sunset.

The banks along Spring Creek from Veteran’s Park to Goeres Park and the water itself are cleaner and much more debris free.
Our sincere thanks go to the effort of the Environmental Science classes of Mr. Anthony Schnell and Ms. Donna Melchior at the Lodi High School. On Thursday, May 07, 2009, the students came on two buses, one in the a.m. and one in the p.m. and swept along the creek banks, grabbing cans, bottles, Styrofoam, plastic bags and some unidentified large objects of interest. Several students brought waders and walked in the water along the route. Read more »

Rocky Arbor State Park
by Pete Price
Rocky Arbor State Park is small by anyone’s standards. The 244-acre State Park is within 1.5 miles of the popular Wisconsin Dells vacation community. The park offers cool shady woods and some rock formations. There is a relatively easy mile long trail the meanders through the park. The park is only officially open during the summer months. That is to say, vehicles may enter the park from May to September and have access to some campsites. It is very pretty during the fall season because of its mixture of ferns, pine and deciduous trees.
I really enjoy walking Rocky Arbor because it is so quiet and serene. I have been there a number of times over the last couple of years. If the park is not officially open, you can park by the front entrance, slip around the gate blocking the road and “hit the trail.” It is a great place to escape from busy activity.
The park entrance is about ¾ mile off Interstate 90/94 North of Wisconsin Dells at the highway 12/16 exit heading East.
